Rugby League Bet Types

The growth of rugby league over the past 20 years has been unparalleled. The biggest domestic competitions are the NRL and Super League in Australia and the United Kingdom respectively. The popularity of the sport has ensured a wide range of betting markets for their faithful fans, however, the markets in rugby league are different to that of rugby union, and that makes it important for bettors to understand all the different options that are open to them at online sportsbook rugby league betting markets. Here are some of the rugby league bet types that will catch your eye.

Match Betting

The most straightforward way to place a bet on rugby league is the match betting market. Here wagerers would simply lay a stake on what they believe the result of the match will be. The three options available on this market are the home win, the draw and the away win. The bet is a simple win or lose, with the settling of the bet coming after the full-time whistle.

For example in a fixture that sees Salford Red Devils host the Warrington Wolves, if you place a bet on Warrington to win and they do; the bet is a winner. However, if it is a draw or Salford win, then the stake is lost. These match bets aren’t typically lucrative, which means gamblers often combine multiple match bet selections into a longer formed accumulator.

Handicap Betting Market

Unlike in rugby union, the gulf between the sides in rugby league isn’t as drastic. This means these handicaps are typically shorter than what you would expect in the other code. However, the handicap market evens up the difference between the two sides, with the favourite starting with a points disadvantage.

For instance, in a fixture between the Huddersfield Giants and Catalan Dragons; the Giants would start with a -8 handicap. This means that for the bet to be a winner then the Giants would need to win by at least nine points. Otherwise, the bet is lost. Most bookmakers also offer different handicaps, so there is always an option should you want a higher or lower handicap.

Head to Head Market

This market removes the possibility of a draw from the match odds. The odds are slightly smaller, but also offers an insurance to get the stake back should the match end in a draw. The bettorr would simply select one of the sides, and if that team wins, then the bet is a winner. However, if the team they choose loses, then the stake is lost.

Dozen Winning Margins Market

One of the bets that are unique for rugby league betting types is the dozen winning margin. Here the wagerer can bet on the margin that their selected team wins by. After choosing the team they believe will win, they can select whether the team will win by a margin of between 1-12 or 13 or more. It could be a lucrative market should the punters have done the adequate research.

First Tryscorer Market

Punters can lay a stake on the player that they believe will score the first try in the designated match. The bet is settled when the first try has been scored, and should your pick the scorer then the bet is a winner. However, if the selection doesn’t score the first try, then the bet is settled as a lost stake. There is also a market for anytime tryscorer, which offers a layer of security that the player selected can score at any time in the match. However, the odds for these are slightly smaller.

First Score of The Game Market

Another unique rugby league betting market is the ability to place a wager on the team that will score first in the game, and how they will record their first points. After selecting the team that they think will score first, choose whether to wager them on scoring via a try, penalty or field goal. The bet is settled once the first score of the match has been added to the scoreboard.

Half Time/Full-Time Market

One of the most lucrative markets available to rugby league is the ability to place a wager on the team that will be winning at half time, and which side will be winning at full time. Both aspects of the best must be correct for the bet to be a winner. There are six possible selections for this bet.

Race To Ten Points Market

This market is another unique to rugby league, as you can bet on the team that will make it to ten points first, where you choose between three selections: Team A, Team B, or neither. The latter of the options are typically very high odds since it’s extremely rare that neither side will score at least ten points.

Outright Market

The fierce competitions in rugby league mean that there is an array of outright markets to take advantage of. These include:

  • the ability to place a wager on the team that will win the respective competition,
  • selecting a player that will finish the season as the leading pointscorer and leading tryscorer,
  • the team that will finish bottom of the Super League and/or NRL.

It is also possible to place an each-way bet on the team they will win the Super League, NRL and World Cup. This means that they can receive some money back even if their side finishes as runners-up. Other competitions that rugby league punters can bet on are the NSW Cup, QLD Cup, and the NRLW.
